More Island Life

Thursday, June 21, 2018 – This was our day to finish up seeing the parts of the “Points East Coastal Drive” that we hadn’t seen yet. This meant that we would cut cross country to pick up the East Point section of the island, and then come inland for a little section near Charlottetown. We found some great sights along the way.

First of all, most of our driving was right along the coast, so the views out the window were spectacular! I kept being blown away every time we would come over a rise or around a bend. Just WOW!

Our first stop was Souris. We enjoyed a walk on the beach while the tide was mostly out. We had great views of the town and the lighthouse, along with the shore beyond. We walked a bit and looked at a shop by the shore, then were back in the car and on to the next stop.

We stopped at Basin Head Beach next. It is the home of the singing sand. The sand doesn’t really sing, but it does really squeak. That was entertaining!

After that, it was on to East Point Lighthouse. It is a pretty lighthouse, but the most interesting thing to me was that it was the only part of our trip that had cloud cover. Within five minutes before and after that spot, the sky was blue and beautiful, whereas right there it was complete cloud cover. Weather is interesting!

As we left the lighthouse, we drove along the north side of the east part of the island and saw more of those awe-inspiring views. We ended up at Cable Head West Beach all by ourselves. One of the things I love best about PEI is how un-crowded it is. Part of that is the time of year we go there, as it is very early in the season. It is fun to have a beach all to yourself! Anyway, after Cable Head, we drove a central section of the Points East drive that we had missed before, down to Charlottetown and along the southern coast near there. When we had completed all the sections of the drive, we headed cross country back to our place.  We had a simple supper of eggs and potatoes and one more relaxing evening.

Friday, June 22, 2018 – We did just about nothing this day. I spent a lot of time down at the shore with the seals and herons. I witnessed one pretty funny event down there. There were three seals, sunning themselves on rocks just under the surface of the water, as the tide was going out. I was photographing them, and happened to look down at my pictures for a minute, to see if I should adjust anything before taking more. All of a sudden, I heard a big splash - three of them, actually. A heron had flown really close and scared all the seals into the water. I could almost hear the heron laughing as he flew by me. I got a picture of the splash ripples, anyway, if I did miss the actual dive.

This was our last full day here, which is hard. I love it so much here on Prince Edward Island. We did go into town looking for souvenirs for a short time. We ended up going back to Panmure Island Lighthouse to buy something made by a local artisan. We found a little image of Prince Edward Island, made from sea glass, and highlighting the area we stayed this time. It will make a wonderful remembrance of our time here. I made pizza for supper. It is Friday, after all! I miss our Friday night pizza night with the family. At least we had the pizza, if not the family. It was delicious, and will be good for leftovers on the road. We started packing a few things up as we finished using them for the last time. Sigh. All good things must come to an end, I guess. I do love home, too. I guess it’s time to head that direction.
